Very often, we come across tweets that feel like they exist because something deep down inside us put them there. They express our opinions better than we ever could, and it just clicks. The underlying wit in all of us rejoices when we come across these smart jokes, meaningful insights, glorious puns; and we start believing the Internet is worth so, so much.
Here are twelve tweets from 2017 that magically manage to mirror the respective months so effectively, that they leave us asking for more.
Shape of January

This tweet is the best of both worlds ﹘ Ed’s fabulous New Year releases and the hilarious ‘Hollyweed’ prank. What with Shape of You being the literal background music for 2017 and Castle on the Hill an onion-cutting-ninja, neither does Twitter’s Sheeran-outburst come as a surprise, nor is anyone complaining. And a fangirl tweet with meme references? Yes please!
March… no wait. February.
https://twitter.com/BillyCrystal/status/836087692937035777
Remember the Oscar mix-up? Right after the unfortunate way the 2017 election panned out? Well, Billy’s clearly made the most of the situation with this one. La la land’s near victory over Moonlight was easily the single most ‘wtf’ moment in Oscar history. The Twitter community obviously lost no time in taking a jab at it, and aren’t we thankful!
March into BBC
https://twitter.com/bonappetit/status/840242130035576832
The adorable viral video of two kids gate-crashing their dad’s BBC news session about South Korea was the perfect bait for ‘dank’ tweets. The journalist’s oh-no face as opposed to the kids’ party state, left us in stitches. What followed, was an influx of hilarious jokes and instances so relatable you’d want to strut your way into their room.
Kendall Ain’t Fooling No One
https://twitter.com/BRANDONWARDELL/status/849371484128673794
There are ads that make mighty claims, then there’s the Kendall Jenner Pepsi commercial. Literally asking for it, the ad bore the brunt of three kinds of people – the angry, the witty, and the mix of both. Effectively summing up everything that was wrong with the video, Brandon smoothly falls into the last category.
May he Tweet in Peace
Think Twitter, think Trump. Think Trump’s Twitter, think covfefe. It would be grossly unfair to leave this one out of the 2017 tweet list. It might only have been up for half a day, but we’re clearly going to talk about it for way longer. He quickly followed it up with a “Who can figure out the true meaning of covfefe??? Enjoy!”. Way to go, Prez.
Hey June, Don’t be Afraid
https://twitter.com/quintabrunson/status/875856415176495104
After ice-bucket and mannequin, came the viral ‘Floor is lava’ challenge. Of course, the Twitter community somehow managed to weave Trump to the whole situation. Don’t complain – the 2017 elections totally foresaw it. And, if I may have the audacity to say so – this tweet is gold (and oil).
Twin Beys? Julying!
https://twitter.com/itsonlyzach/status/826866547482296320
Keeping calm was not an option – our Queen announced twins! It triggered a lot of things; excitement, fangirling, and the inherent wit in all of us. Zach, however, takes the cake with this glorious play on words which is so bad, it’s worthy of preserving in a glass jar.
Solar August

The solar eclipse, to be fair, received an unwarranted amount of (disappointing) attention. The one thing we’re not complaining about, is the beautiful traffic of tweets it garnered. This one in particular, as you can see, got pretty darn popular with good reason; and a lot of us twitter-ers live for these moments, where a tweet is so witty it just takes our breath away.
Saudi September
https://twitter.com/rameshsrivats/status/912900141614542849
Twitter was flooded with celebrations and cynicism alike, as the announcement of Saudi women being allowed to drive next year onwards hit the media. It’s undoubtedly a step towards empowerment – almost surreal. Which is probably why the Twitter community can’t help but render the whole thing too-good-to-be-true.
Not-ok October
https://twitter.com/therealpaulah/status/919740074610364416
With #MeToo being a scarily viral and largely used hashtag this October, this tweet aptly captures what all of us felt about the entire issue. While an unbelievable number of social media posts did manage to create awareness, we’ve still got a long, long way to go before #MeToo will be used in a context of “I feel safe in my country, #MeToo”.
A November Nostalgia
https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/932685522820042754/photo/1
What came as a gust of hope, a welcome reminder that a presidency can indeed be peaceful, was this jolly birthday greeting from Obama for his very own Joe. Being the sport he is, he has quickly caught on to the meme world’s ‘Obama-Joe bromance’ and is playing along pretty well. Nice to know there’s still love amid turmoil.
She’s a Jolly Good Fellow
Just when you thought the Brexit drama had died out, a translator effectively brought it all back this December with an unfortunate case of mis-dubbing. He (accurately, to be honest) dubbed Theresa May as ‘Madam Brexit’; and sure enough, everyone lost their cool. Nothing like another Trump-aimed tweet to end the year, eh?
2017, however frustrating, is undeniably way better in a Twitter nutshell. It doesn’t cease to be fascinating how social media content is so often more insightful than actual news content – and we sure will continue to swear by it.
